Don't Stay Isolated

Tip: People with autism can use social media to find others who have similar interests like them. For example, instead of following famous football players, I would follow a sports statistics page. You can curate your social media page to reflect things you like.

For people with autism, it can be hard to have friends by their side. Most of the time, they feel isolated and think that no one understands them. People like me see the world differently than everybody else. I try to find and be around people who accept me for who I am. There are times when I like to hang out with friends, but when I'm not at school, it makes it harder for me to interact with anyone. Even when I try to talk about popular subjects like football, I talk about unexpected things like statistics and the schedule, whereas boys talk about other players and being at the game.

Social media (Facebook and Twitter) is one of the best ways to interact with people especially during quarantine or when people have to socially isolate. My sister likes to use Instagram to stay in touch with her friends. She constantly posts creative pictures, is conversing with others her age, and is interested in her friends' lives. On the other hand, I'm more interested in Youtube because I like to watch videos privately. When it comes to Youtube, I like to watch videos with no one around, and I don't have to comment on them or reply. However, I like to read other people's comments and end up having a good laugh.

Another thing I do whenever I get lonely is that I try to get in contact with my friends by using Snapchat, Google Hangouts, and Zoom. By using Google Hangouts and Zoom, I'm able to talk with people socially on video. I also look at some of my old yearbooks for memories, but it was not the same.
